The name of the city Beruwela is taken from the Sinhalese word Beruwela meaning where the place where the sail is lowered. It is said that this is the place where the first Arab Muslim settlers landed around the eighth century. And while one is there the harbor in beruwela city Sri Lanka is an interesting place to watch the fishermen unload their catch. The harbor has over 400 boats, many of them are quite sizeable since the fishermen spend up to two month at sea. One can hire a boat to the lighthouse raised on a small island off-shore hich offers views over the coast line from the top. Just off the coast are coral gardens, making this the perfect spot for divers and snorkellers to view spectacular coral and sea life.
Beruwela city’s peak season is between October and March. Dry, sunny weather and good swimming. But even outside the so called high-season Beruwela is a good place to go. The sea between April and September is quite rough but the weather is, apart from the odd shower, very good. Cool and breezy even the rooms come cheap. |
