Hambantota City Information |
Hambantota city Sri Lanka is located in southern coastal area of Sri Lanka. It is also the capital of the district Hambantota in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka and is the electoral district of current president. Hambantota city Sri Lanka is 240km from Colombo, and is truly a travelers' haven which is developing into a fully fledged holiday resort. The region was a area with troubles in the 1980 and 1990s but now is heading towards a popular holiday destination. The city stands on a sandy headland, on the seaward side of which a huge fleet of outrigger fishing canoes draws up, and the horizon is almost always dotted with their small triangular sails. With sweeping sandy beaches on either side, it is also a convenient base for exploring the nearby Bundala National Park and, somewhat further away, the Ruhuna National Park and the temples at Kataragama. |
Hambantota city Sri Lanka is witnessing damages on its coastal sand dunes by human activities mainly due to the increasing population. Removal of sand and landscaping of dunes for housing construction are two activities that result in dune degradation. Moreover linear sand dunes have been cut-down to control floods, which have resulted in the discontinuation of sand dune development. Other reasons for dune degradation have been unauthorized constructions; trampling and related human activities, especially developing network of paths and tracks across the dunes; beaching of fishing crafts, dumping of solid waste and garnet sand mining along the coast. |
